The Tor des Glaciers is underway with its pioneering runners

The 98 trailblazing ultrarunners set off from Jardin de l'Ange at 8pm sharp on the first section of the Tor des Glaciers, greeted by hundreds of supporters who crowded the centre of Courmayeur: 450km with a 32,000m altitude difference. A totally unique race and overall experience that will test the runners’ athleticism and capacity for self-sufficiency to the extreme as they confront the unprecedented Alte Vie 3 and 4 in the Valle d’Aosta, encountering largely unknown ridges and ancient glaciers that are way off the normal trekking routes.
A start on a grey day, with a variable weather which will be part of the journey until at least tomorrow. Little snow fell today, but is already melting: the normal route is confirmed. More attention must be paid on Monday, with low temperatures and ice on the trails, particularly in the morning.
22 nations were represented at the starting line. Italy has the highest number of runners with 40, followed by France (18), Belgium and Spain (6), Japan (4), Poland (3), Canada, Portugal, Turkey and the United States (2), then Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Denmark, Peru, Slovenia, UK, French Guyana and Andorra with one runner each.
Four women are taking part: Anouk Baars from South Africa, Marina Plavan and Ita Emanuela Marzotto from Italy and Ligia Madrigal from Costa Rica.
Early estimates suggest that the winner will complete the race in approximately 98 hours, with the overall time limit set at 190 hours to reach the finish line in Courmayeur, i.e. by 6pm on Saturday 14 September.
Competing for the victory will be Japanese Masahiro Ono, twice in fifth place at Tor des Géants® (in 2014 and 2015), eighth in 2013 and 20th in 2017. 17th in 2018 is French Thierry Ador, with Luca Guerini 19th. Good results at TOR also for Girgin Sertan (38th last year) and Kurt Nadler (32th in 2017). Among the starters is also Ruggero Isernia, one TOR senators.
