#Day4: Tor 2017, to Basque Javi Dominguez Ledo victory and record

After Oscar Perez in 2012 and Iker Karrera in 2013, is now Javi Dominguez Ledo making wave the flag of Spain on the highest flagpole of Tor des Géants® 2017.

The Basque athlete of forty-fourth years, lives in Vitoria-Gasteiz where he works as a researcher engineer - he arrived at Courmayeur's finish line on Wednesday morning at 6.12 am after 67 hours 52 min and 15 seconds of race.

Dominguez, started racing on trails in 2008, after four years of road marathons. He already conquered the third and fifth place in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, just to name a race around the mountain near his home.
With the incredible time recorded at the finish in Courmayeur, the Iberian trailer has also fixed the new record of “the toughest Endurance Trail in the World."
A definition that may still seem like a slogan to many, but again this year, it have been demonstrated that it is not. Evidence is the tough fight that the Basque athlete had to sustain for more than 300 kilometers with the Italian “colleague" (even in profession) Franco Collé, before Franco decide to withdraw at 22 kilometers from the finish line.

Dominguez did not have an “easy life” even in the final part, the one that from  Colle of Malatrà "goes down" to Courmayeur, because followed closely by Oliviero Bosatelli, author of a continuous but not sufficient comeback. For him second place, really close to the leader.

Third, on paper because at the moment of writing it, he hasn't crossed the last hill jet, it's Andrea Macchi from Varese, winner of the 2017 edition of the Orobie Ultra Trail. The hardness of the path, which in these first three days of racing has alternated the daytime heat to the frost of the night (hills temperatures even several degrees below zero and strong wind in some stretches) was also underlined also by the 200 withdrawn, on the 875 starters, for muscular or joint problems and intestinal troubles.

Among those who are forced to abandon, also several famous names, considered among the favorites or in any case very popular. Names such as Jules Henri Gabioud, Michele Graglia, Gianluca Galeati, Cristian Caselli, Joe Grant, Enzo Benvenuto, Bruno Brunod, Nico Valsesia, just to name a few.

In the female category, at two-thirds of the race, the Venetian Lisa Borzani is firmly in the lead, but as the male category "teaches", the Tor can reserve surprises up to the last few meters. Indeed, surprises are usually much more frequent than certainties.

Great work today for organizers, journalists, photographers, volunteers, because aside from the the male podium (the official award ceremony on Sunday, as scheduled), the "war machine" moved to Gressoney where in the evening, at 9 p.m, the Tot Dret will start, the new race that moves on 130 km, another 375 athletes.

Also for them the arrival will be in Courmayeur, after maximum 38 hours of race. In short, the high altitude paths towards the Italian capital of Mont Blanc will be crowded until Saturday.
