GRAN PARADISO
NATIONAL PARK
Gran Paradiso National Park, once the royal hunting reserve of the House of Savoy, was the first national park established in Italy in 1922.
Its history is closely linked to the protection of the Alpine ibex, which King Victor Emmanuel II had already saved from extinction in 1856 by declaring this area a Royal Hunting Reserve.
The park can be visited in every season: a dense network of trails winds through stunning landscapes and offers the chance to encounter local wildlife—especially in spring, when chamois and ibex descend into the valleys in search of the first grass. With a bit of luck, visitors may also spot the golden eagle or the bearded vulture, a large bird of prey that disappeared in 1912 and has since returned to the Alps thanks to an international reintroduction project.
